Summary

The manga adaptation of the landmark animated series that changed the mecha genre。 Each volume contains three of the original graphic novels and includes pages of stunning, full-color art。

Once Shinji didn’t care about anything; then he found people to fight for—only to learn that he couldn’t protect them or keep those he let into his heart from going away。 As mankind tilts on the brink of the apocalyptic Third Impact, human feelings are fault lines leading to destruction and just maybe, redemption and rebirth。

This isn't Ryo Asuka from Devilman, but Kaworu Nagisa, a Christ figure pretty much。 PlotThe plot follows the anime, more loosely this time around。 I will just go over what is different as that is what matters the most。 The watermelon field scene is replaced with a scene in a bunker。 During this scene Kaji explains his backstory。 Backstory is great, getting rid of the watermelon field scene is not。 Rei/Shinji is pushed pretty hard, with Rei having much more screen time。 I personally like this, I love both Rei/Shinji and Asuka/Shinji, just a performance for the former。 Kaworu is introduced earlier。 I would say this defeats the purpose of Kaworu, but Manga Kaworu is a completely different character from his anime and Rebuild counterparts。 The biggest letdown is Shinji's time absorbed by the Eva。 Episode 20 is one of my favorite episodes, and its version of it was a real letdown。 ArtThe art is great as always。 。。。more

It is safe to say that this 3rd collection (comprising of the original volumes 7, 8 and 9) is where things are starting to come to a head, and things are becoming more and more troubling。Spoilers under the tag:(view spoiler)[The original volume 7 opens with Shinji, undergoing sync tests with EVA-01, but fighting it every step along the way (recall that the previous volume ended up in a traumatic manner, with the death of one of his close friends)。He leaves NERV once again, refusing to ever pilot It is safe to say that this 3rd collection (comprising of the original volumes 7, 8 and 9) is where things are starting to come to a head, and things are becoming more and more troubling。Spoilers under the tag:(view spoiler)[The original volume 7 opens with Shinji, undergoing sync tests with EVA-01, but fighting it every step along the way (recall that the previous volume ended up in a traumatic manner, with the death of one of his close friends)。He leaves NERV once again, refusing to ever pilot EVA-01, after another dramatic confrontation with his father, Gendo Ikari。 It's at this point that Kaji takes him aside, and explains to Shinji, his tragic story after he was left an orphan along with his brother and other children, after the events of the Second Impact。As much as I appreciated the insight into Kaji's survivor guilt, what struck me most was his comment and understanding that the Second Impact occurred because an Angel made contact with Adam (which will be made clear later)。While discussions were taking place, EVA-00 (Rei) and EVA-02 (Asuka) are busy fighting off an Angel, that very quickly incapacitated both EVA units, and EVA-01 has rejected the Dummy Plug, which had previously worked。 It becomes very quickly apparent, that EVA-01 has a mind of her own。。。Stories and the overarching idea start coming to the fore once Shinji becomes absorbed into EVA-01。 There's a complex, high-level discussion of the human psyche, breaking through physical barriers (as if that wasn't already obvious with both the Angels' and EVA units' use of AT fields), what the LCL liquid is (potentially an alternative to amniotic fluid), and even what (or more accurately, who) Rei is。Volume 8, Fuyutsuki's flashbacks with his discussions with Yui Ikari (and even those with Gendo) are incredibly telling。 Volume 8 also signals the end of a character, and his death fuels Misato's passion in sifting fact from fiction。 It also leads into volume 9, where the flashback sequences start revealing Asuka's troubled relationship with her mother, ultimately leading to a mental breakdown during a confrontation with an Angel。 Kaworu makes his appearance too。。。 which means that the end is nigh。 (hide spoiler)]Rei's denial that she and Kaworu were the same, is very interesting - potentially signalling that while their composition / shell may be the same, she still has a soul somewhere。 Interesting too, was Asuka's history, which goes a ways towards explaining her motivations, and why she chooses to act the way she does。 Her prime motivations has always been for attention and praise, very much like how Shinji's always wanted his father's praise and attention。 I wonder if this is a commentary of a child's desire to please, and desire to seek a connection with their emotionally (and even physically) distant parents, and likewise, their growing desire to seek a connection with someone else if that parent is absent?I am fascinated too, in Shinji's desire to become close to Rei while being likewise uncomfortable with Kaworu's desire to be physically (and otherwise?) closer to himself too。 I suspect that the manga and the translation, is a slightly less vague and obscure about what is going on, given that we are allowed into Kaworu's thought processes?Anyways - onto the fourth collection! 。。。more

Another beautiful installment in the series。 Not my favorite section, everyone is sad, and lots of sad things happen to them。 Despite the depressing chapters, still 5 stars。

Relationships are explored more intesly than in the anime and the coming of the 5th child brings many questions for those in command who begin to realise just how far they are from the inner circle than previously understood。 This is the issue where events differ from the newer movie reboot。 so if you are familiar with the events of the anime, cast aside all expectations as you will be shocked by the amount of information dumping that is completely necessary。In summary, this volume spends a lot of time in the past (or present depending on which dimension you are in) answering questions on how everyone and everything came to be where they are at this point。 。。。more

The poor TV show got to feeling like a first draft by the end。 This feels like a polished story。 Lots of pacing fixes, and it makes more time for the characters, too。

This is a darker section of the Evangelion story than the prior volumes。 Because of that I don't want to get into spoilers, so I can't share too much of what happens here。I can say that this volume deviates from the anime in a few significant ways。 Most notably, Kaworu is introduced to NERV before Arael attacks。We get more hints about the true nature of the Evas, and LCL。 This is a darker section of the Evangelion story than the prior volumes。 Because of that I don't want to get into spoilers, so I can't share too much of what happens here。I can say that this volume deviates from the anime in a few significant ways。 Most notably, Kaworu is introduced to NERV before Arael attacks。We get more hints about the true nature of the Evas, and LCL。 。。。more

I don't think this volume is significantly better than the previous two, but it was with this book that I started to appreciate the depth of characters and also the religious themes more fully。 Maybe this volume retroactively makes the previous volumes even better, but at the very least, the quality of this one is superb。 The flashbacks and character points-of-view were particularly effective story-telling techniques。 I don't think this volume is significantly better than the previous two, but it was with this book that I started to appreciate the depth of characters and also the religious themes more fully。 Maybe this volume retroactively makes the previous volumes even better, but at the very least, the quality of this one is superb。 The flashbacks and character points-of-view were particularly effective story-telling techniques。 。。。more

So loving this series。 It's a little back-loaded though。 I wish Sadamoto hadn't cut some of the stuff from the earlier episodes; he seems to be including everything from the end of the series。 I don't think the series is quite lighthearted enough before it turns heavy。 BUT still this series is amazing, and I love all the detail and reinterpretation of characters and events, and a lot of backstory that's not there in the series。 So loving this series。 It's a little back-loaded though。 I wish Sadamoto hadn't cut some of the stuff from the earlier episodes; he seems to be including everything from the end of the series。 I don't think the series is quite lighthearted enough before it turns heavy。 BUT still this series is amazing, and I love all the detail and reinterpretation of characters and events, and a lot of backstory that's not there in the series。 。。。more

Stuff I Read - Neon Genesis Evangelion vol。 7, 8, & 9 ReviewNot gonna lie, I rather like reading this series in omnibus form。 For all that there's a lot of action and a ton of angst, things just seem to move better having all of these together。 Though maybe that has more to do with the fact that I'm super slow and it would have taken me a year or more to read these all separately。 So I am quite glad that they are collected here。 Of course, most of this volume is dealing with the aftermath of dea Stuff I Read - Neon Genesis Evangelion vol。 7, 8, & 9 ReviewNot gonna lie, I rather like reading this series in omnibus form。 For all that there's a lot of action and a ton of angst, things just seem to move better having all of these together。 Though maybe that has more to do with the fact that I'm super slow and it would have taken me a year or more to read these all separately。 So I am quite glad that they are collected here。 Of course, most of this volume is dealing with the aftermath of death。 Not death on the grand scale that it's been happening。 I mean, with each Angel attack people die。 But this death has rocked Shinji and put him on the outs with his dad。 Real shocker, I know。 These volumes explore that death, though, and how it has basically undone all the progress Shinji has made。 He can't face school, he can't really connect。 Pair that with Asuka's deterioration following the disappearance of the man she was interested in and continuing to underperform, and the series in general is really hitting its stride。There was a moment there when this series seemed like it could be a high school drama。 Where Shinji could almost be normal。 That was shattered at the end of the last omnibus and here things are back to bleak bleak bleak。 The Angels are continuing to attack and Shinji gets a few pep talks as normal, but the scope of the story starts to shift to show what's happened around the drama。 What Shinji's dad is doing。 What happened to Shinji's mom。 What happened to Asuka's mom。 All of these things are revealed, and the story is richer for them。 It can't quite escape the tropes from earlier, but my god does it subvert some of them, especially by the arrival of Kowaru。 I love how things get flipped there, with a more sexually aggressive character who is a man and so puts Shinji in a lot of awkward situations。 He's like a mix of Rei and Asuka and Shinji really can't deal with it while it also seems like he might be into it too。 It's crazy and still kinda funny but it represents things starting to come apart。The plot behind the Angels intensifies, with bigger battles and some really interesting plots and counterplots behind the scenes。 Finally a lot of the shadows are clearing and the reader is allowed to see the mysterious council and learn a bit about it all。 Of course, it comes at a price, but that works too。 For most of this omnibus, things are just being set up。 Shinji is restricted here the entire time, not allowed to fight, really, until the end, and things there are。。。not going well。 But it being an omnibus means the slower sections, those dealing with the past, don't dominate, and there's still a nice momentum building, things really starting to shatter from before。 The happiness and hope that was present when Shinji was fitting in at school is here gone, and there is a strong sense that it is not coming back。In the end, the series continues to keep my attention, and I'm liking it even more than the show。 The mood has definitely fallen but I've been waiting for Kowaru to show up and now that he's here it's amazing。 Naked showers! The way that the series is going, and there there's still give volumes to go, means that there's a lot to happen yet。 Which is great。 Hopefully it will continue to be fun and dark and deep。 These volumes, for me, get an 8/10。 。。。more
